5 (Mostly Historical) Shows We Binge Watched

Now that most of my shows are done for the season and some might not be back until 2020- edit: 2021 (I’m looking at you Outlander…) I’m looking for some new shows to watch or binge.

In the day and age of Netflix, the phrase ‘binge watch’ has become a household saying. Since we are in the dead of winter and probaly taking in a lot of television viewing,  I thought I would share some of our favorite shows. These are easily binge worthy. Now keep in mind some of these require a subscription since they are shown on a premium channel but don’t let that deter you! Check your local library or community of libraries- they are sure to have them on file and free for borrowing. I find watching tv shows like this make a great date night with my husband. Try it out sometime!

Here are five (edit: six) (mostly historical) binge worthy shows to try:

TURN: Washington Spies

This is our most recent binge watch. Joe had watched this when it was actually airing. I’m kinda sad I didn’t find it sooner and watch it with him. I caught on after it was already done. It’s a drama about the first spy ring in America during the Revolutionary War time period. It centers around a group of childhood friends who form the ‘Culper Spy Ring’ who are trying to figure out the British strategy. It’s so good and intriguing. There’s a villain involved and I just GAH! want to strangle him. Sorry but it’s true, he’s just so annoying and evil! There’s a lot of it filmed in and around Williamsburg and it takes place in what is now known as Long Island and I have ancestors who settled there when they first came to America in the 1600s, so of course I like that. We would be watching and say ‘oooh that’s the Governor’s Palace’, that sort of thing. But man, I’m a sucker for period pieces now! Especially the Revolutionary War time period! This can be found on AMC.

LOST

This was our first real binge watch. We would stay up SOOO late to watch about two or three episodes in a row! We started this right before I had our youngest and then watched it while I was giving him his evening feeding. Talk about sleep depravation! This was one I wish I would have watched when it aired too. I kept hearing about it but never watched it. Plus, it came out with my husband and I were dating and there wasn’t much tv watching back then. I’m sure most people know it’s about a plane crash and there’s a ton of suspense and a lot of fantasy. But it is sooo good! It will keep you wanting more after each episode. I have a lot of unanswered questions though! This show can be found on Netflix.

Outlander

Sigh, I must admit this show isn’t probably the best for everyone. We had Starz free back in January 2017 and I watched maybe two episodes. Not sure why I didn’t get into it. Then, we had Starz free again in July. Well, oh my word, let me tell you. I’m obsessed with Scotland now! I want to go so bad. The scenery is amazing on this show!

Anyway, the show is about a 1940s nurse and her husband,  who were both involved in World War II, who take a second honeymoon to Scotland. She is into botany and is around this stone circle picking flowers and she ‘falls’ through time to the 1743 Scotland. It is a couple of years before the 1745 Jacobite rebellion (when Scotland essentially gets stripped of it’s clans, tartans, and bagpipes). She wants to desperately get back to her time but ends up having to marry a 20 something Scottish warrior to keep herself safe (if you think about it, her husband isn’t even born yet in that time). And well, I will leave it at that…

Even though there are some elements (bad things happen in that century that we shake our heads at) that I don’t agree with. However, the foundation of love and loyalty are there and it just gets me! Since then, I have read all the books and I just love the history and romance. The tv show helps the books come alive too. Again, a period piece- I’m a sucker for it! Now we wait for Season 5! When the precursor to the Revolutionary War starts in North Carolina! This show can be found on Starz. I sign up for the season and then cancel.

Poldark

This is a Masterpiece Theatre show and a winner! Another period piece! Ross Poldark comes home from serving in the Revolutionary War and realizes he lost the love of his life (he was thought to be dead). He begins rebuilding his life and home. However, Ross always seems to find trouble. Of course there’s romance and it’s just another one I wanted to keep watching. The landscape is just breathtaking and I am a sucker for a tricorn hat!  Now we wait for Season 5 too! This show can be found on PBS and AmazonPrime.

Victoria

So obviously this is about Queen Victoria and her rise to the throne. Normally, I’m not a fan of Civil War time period, but it’s making a believer out of me. It is still just as good! I really like the acting and characters in this show. It is filmed so well and just keeps you interested. Victoria Season 3 is now available on PBS and Amazon Prime.

TIMELESS

I’m adding one more- I put that in capital letters because this show now ranks up there with my love for Outlander. This show really spoke to my history loving heart. Three  This show makes you get invested in these characters. It got to the point where they were practically like ‘friends/buds’. I almost cried at the end. If you watch it you will see why (at least I hope). They go as far back as 1600s Salem and as far present as the 1980s. I don’t think I ever binged a show this hard since ‘Lost’.

So what did you enjoy binging??

Let me know in the comments below! I’d love to get into a new series!

Especially a new historical series!

Have a great week!

I love finding antiques/vintage and rustic items to add to my home decor, vacationing in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and fantasizing about trips to Scotland. Read more
