For the longest time, our master bedrooms (we’ve lived in three homes) were not cozy and a space I thought as my sanctuary. Since we are now settled in our fourth home, I sought to really design a bedroom that was just that, cozy and a sanctuary and reflected us.
Our bedroom suit we’ve had since we were married always seem too big and dark for the spaces we lived in. We had a cherry toned wood sleigh bed, long dresser with mirror and a tall dresser. I don’t know what I was thinking when we selected it.
BEFORE:
We were able to sell our bedroom suit to friends of ours. I was thinking this would speed up the process but it did not. About 3 months later we were still sleeping on our mattress and box spring on the floor! Luckily, my husband has finished the construction and painting and we have the finished product before the end of summer!
We started by adding an antique dresser that my Great Grandparents gave my grandparents as a wedding gift. I have no idea how old it is. If you want to weigh in or know, let me know! I didn’t really need to downsize any clothing to fit everything in this dresser. Next I found a lovely antique Bassett dresser and night stand. I love the detail on the drawer pulls.
In the Spring, my husband painted the sterile white walls Colonnade Grey by Sherwin Williams and color matched it with Valspar. My husband gets a discount so we have been using Valspar in our whole house. It works well and my husband seems to really like their paint. The trim is Swiss Coffee by Behr. My parents had some left over from their paint project so we were able to try it. I really like it. Now to paint all the trim in the house. Not fun!
Next, I found window treatments in a cream honeycomb style from Target. I wanted an old beam shelf above our bed and found a place that sells salvage wood from historic buildings. Right up my alley! Ours came from a 19th century mill in Lancaster City that was being torn down. It has the old wooden pegs and morter and tendon. And complete with old handmade long and short nails! I now have them in a mason jar!
I also needed a way to organize my necklaces and I found this awesome accordion wall hook at an antique store for only $4!
Our bed was made using new wood but the headboard is an old door that even had a skeleton key lock panel! We sanded it down using a Festool sander and attachment that attaches to your shop vac to minimize lead paint dust exposure. I love the patina that is left with hints of sky blue paint. We used Behr Almond Cream paint.
I was asked by Ghost bed to review their Ghost pillow. This pillow is great. It has definitely helped cradle my head and help my neck and shoulders not feel as stiff in the morning. It helps you not feel hot, as it has little air holes that keep the pillow and you remarkable cool! It is an investment but it works great! I am a sucker for memory pillows so this was right up my alley. Plus, it came at a time I needed it, when I was sleeping on a mattress on the floor! I now currently have three pillows on my side of the bed. Check out my review of the pillow!
We just added a tv to our bedroom. Something I don’t exactly endorse but it does help my husband not fall asleep out in the living room. I figured that once Poldark and Outlander start up again it would be nice to lay in bed watch tv. One of my girlfriends mentioned that she loves reading in her bedroom and turning on the Netflix fireplace scenes and listening to the crackling fire! The boys and I have been snuggling and watching a movie at night on the weekends. So it’s nice to have some quality time that way. We just need to get it mounted to the wall so it doesn’t take up dresser space.
Which now brings me to our new Queen size bed. Back in Fall of 2018 I bought a door which once had panel lock for a skeleton key. I loved it! But it was chippy and needed sanding.
We looked over plans on line and came up with what we liked.
This was a process because there were some tools my husband needed that he didn’t own. Luckily, a friend had a wood shop and he would go over for an hour here and there and work on the intricate details of the posts.
By late July, due to vacation and family matters we finally were able to use it. I am very happy with it. We used Antique White by Behr. We’ve used this for other furniture that was constructed for our home. It does not pull yellow or grey. It is the perfect off white in my opinion.
I have since added a down comforter and a velour blanket to the bottom of our bed for winter. The down comforter came from Home Goods and is a down alternative so it will work for all year round.
This past year I have discovered the idea of hygge. It is a great practice for winter time but elements can be used all year round. Check out my post on that for more ideas.
Update: I recently bought this aqua/turquoise quilt from Target for Spring and Summer.
We are in the process of rehabbing the dresser, so that’s why it is half stripped. The veneer started peeling on the front. I plan to either paint it white or strip the varnish/stain and stain it a natural stain.
I hope you found this post inspiring!
