Creating a Family History Gallery Wall

It’s been a hot minute…I’ve been sick since Valentine’s Day and before that crazy busy. I’m ready to get back into blogging mode. If you know me you know I love old stuff. I always was so fascinated as a kid going through museums and seeing artifacts and things gathered and preserved from another time or place. I loved hearing interesting facts about events and items. To this day I love going to historical places. We have a trip planned this summer to go away as a couple and visit Williamsburg, Virginia again. I have an affinity for the Revolutionary and Colonial times. So many of my ggggg grandparents fought in the Revolutionary War. One even was documented to have lived in Hagerstown, Maryland area and crossed the Delaware with Washington during the famous Christmas Crossing. Now I want a framed print of that for my living room! I love when my family finds family ‘artifacts’. It’s a piece of my family history.

I’ve been really loving my gallery wall in my dining room- as it is taking shape. It has really become a showcase of our family history. Well mostly mine since I have a lot more old pictures and other ‘artifacts’.

It started with our family trees. I framed them with frames I purchased at Michaels. My husband bought the metal ‘H’ from The Lakeside Collection. I have been collecting all the corks from most of our 11 years of marriage. The top patina arrow came from Hobby Lobby. The bottom one came from local shop. The pebble family picture came from Pebble Art Shop on Etsy and are pebbles from the United Kingdom! The chalkboard came from the Target Dollar Spot. The rolling pin is my Great Nanny’s. I just used it this past Christmas to make sugar cookie cut outs for the first time! It’s on by rubbed bronze brackets my hubby purchased at work. The framed letter is a typed version of a letter my 3 times Great Grandfather wrote home while he was serving in the Civil War! It is so interesting and talks about Old Lee and how they could win the war! I think I need to switch it and put the copy of the original (it’s wedged in the top of the frame) in the picture frame instead. The top pick I had up in our old house but decided to put it back up after seeing ‘The Greatest Showman’. It is my Pap’s Uncle Jack Davis (so my Great Great Uncle) who was an elephant tamer in a circus in the 1920s. So I had to put that back up as a conversational piece.

I want to get some old black and whites enlarged and add them to the wall. One of my Great Grandfather on his tractor. One each of my grand parents when they were kids. One especially of my Nan who was on the beach in Atlantic City. One of my grand parents in the 60s. I also want to get a pic enlarged of the sunrise on the Outer Banks that I took on my senior trip. I’d like to also add some more industrial or architectural pieces as well.

Last year my grandfather’s apartment complex caught on fire and everyone down to the first floor (it started in the roof) had to evacuate for a year. My grandmother had passed away about a year or so before and my dad helped him go through numerous old items that I didn’t even know he had. There was a whole footlocker from his days in the military full of school stuff and pictures. My dad went through and labeled them all that he could and passed them on to me. I had ziplock bags full (see pic) and finally got around to finding a photo album to house them all! There were about 200 pictures! My great uncle has more of them since we gave them to him to go through and see if he could identify people. So I will eventually get them to organize. But for now, I’m going to get these into the album.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. Do you like to decorat

Hey there! I’m so glad you stopped by my blog!

I’m a wife to a realtor and a momma to 2 energetic boys, living in a bi-level home (some people call it a split level) and fixing it up to suit us. I love a good DIY and being creative. I am passionate about history and  visiting historical places like it’s my job- particularly Colonial time period. I love finding antiques/vintage and rustic items to add to my home decor, vacationing in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and fantasizing about trips to Scotland. Read more

On this blog I share a lot of those things and more, so comment, share, subscribe and come along for the ride!
