Did You Know You Can Reroot Your Herbs?

I didn’t until recently…

One of my 2019 goals is to start a garden. I want to grow our salad ingredients at our house and save some money. Since we are staying at this house, I decided this year is the year. I immediately dove in and read many articles and a book on gardening the Colonial Williamsburg way. I would like to do it as natural as possible. I had idea after idea of what plant I wanted to grow. It started to overwhelm me. Then I discovered Cali Kim’s YouTube channel and it has really taught me a lot. She says to start out small, you can always add more. That is why I am going to plant a salad garden and build out from there.

For a few years now, I have had an herb garden. The thing is, every year I have had to buy new herb plants. One day, I was digging around (see what I did there) and realized I can reroot most of them! They had been hiding out in the garage in the galvanized tub that I grow them in. So I found the still green ones and thought, I have nothing to lose, let’s do this!

I got a few mason jars and filled them halfway with water. I placed the cuttings in the water and left them go for a few days. I loved checking on them from time to time and was delighted when I saw little roots coming out of the cuttings! Once you see that happening. You can go ahead and get some little pots and fill with potting soil and plant. Make sure you keep watering them since they are indoors. Once your last frost has happened in your zone, go ahead and plant them outdoors. I plan to plant mine in my garden this year instead of the galvanized pot. Tip: I learned that basil is a hot weather herb, so I will need to purchase that in May.

So far, the rosemary is going strong and the oregano. I didn’t have much luck with the lavender, but it’s doable. The parsley wasn’t strong enough and that died off. I am so glad I tried this and that I can save money in years to come!

Have you rerooted anything that you grow? I’d love to know! Let me know down in the comments!

Have a great week,

Momma, you need time away….

Hey there! I’m so glad you stopped by my blog!

I’m a wife to a realtor and a momma to 2 energetic boys, living in a bi-level home (some people call it a split level) and fixing it up to suit us. I love a good DIY and being creative. I am passionate about history and  visiting historical places like it’s my job- particularly Colonial time period. I love finding antiques/vintage and rustic items to add to my home decor, vacationing in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and fantasizing about trips to Scotland. Read more

On this blog I share a lot of those things and more, so comment, share, subscribe and come along for the ride!
