This past Spring and Summer, the idea of embroidery hoop with antique doilies wall art became en vogue. I was at the point where I wanted to make our master bedroom an inviting serene place to be. Your master bedroom is your place to escape the world and should not stress you out. As you can see we changed a lot of things about our bedroom as I showed in my cozy master bedroom redo post.
I saw the idea originally on My Little Kate Cod’s instagram. I thought it was very whimsical. One of the things Katie from My Little Kate Cod mentioned on her instagram was that she wanted it to look like dandelion seeds blowing in the wind. I loved that! I decided to use the same whimsy.
What you will need:
-
Antique doilies in various sizes- you can have different tints if you prefer or keep them all fairly white.
-
Embroidery hoops of various sizes- I got mine at Michael’s and used their coupons. I found that Walmart was fairly picked out or didn’t have enough of the different sizes.
-
A hot glue gun and sticks or other similar glue that would be strong enough to keep the doilies secure for a long time.
-
A pair of scissors- I find fabric scissors are usually the sharpest and work best.
-
Pushpins or small nails- a hammer if you go with the nail option.
-
Your imagination!
First I asked my mother in law and grandmother in law if they had any old doilies or embroidery hoops that they had laying around. After I got what they had, I filled in the rest by checking my local antique stores. I took my time and didn’t just grab any old doily. It had to speak to me or have a pattern I really loved. Plus, I didn’t want to spend more than $2 on them. You want to make sure you are getting different sizes, especially if you are going to create the same whimsical display.
The next thing I did was measure each embroidery hoop. This is where it can get a bit tricky. You want to measure the doilies but minus a half inch or so. You want to remember that when you place the doilies in the embroidery hoops that you have a bit of edge hang over so that you can clip the edge. It could cause some tug of war if you get the size too close to the edge. Keep in mind some doilies can be thick and make it a bit frustrating to put the second outer hoop over the doily and secure.
When you have them all secure trip off the edges to just the edge of the doily that is between the two sets of hoops on each hoop. I know this is scary and hard to do but it’s just a doily. Remember it’s just a doily! Take you hot glue gun and glue that same area to secure the doily so it doesn’t work it’s way out of the hoop and voilà you are ready to hang.
I literally used pushpins like you would use on a cork board. I just put them into the wall and hung each hoop on them. It worked perfectly. I started hanging with the first big hoop’s bottom at just below my antique wooden beam. Next, I added the another one above and to the right. Continue hanging them like they are blowing in the wind. I made sure to space them enough so I had enough to have the smallest one on the other side of my beam.
Thanks for stopping by!
