I finally got around to decorating for the Fall. I was waiting until I came back from the beach, then Florence wrecked my plans. I thought I would share it with you.
I love decorating with meaningful pieces. Each piece, for the most part, is carefully curated by me. I love shopping antique shops- ones that have unique pieces for affordable prices. I do not like expensive antique malls. Your money usually can’t go real far in these places and it’s usually a waste of time for me. Keep this in mind when checking out antique shops.
There are a couple of antique shops within a half hour of me. One in particular that is in my hometown. I shop there on my lunch break at least once a week. It is a relaxing space for me. I can get a breathier and clear my mind.
On a side note, I found this antique door for an amazing price and plan to make it into a headboard for us.
We currently have a dark cherry sleigh bed with matching long dresser with mirror and tall dresser for my husband. I’m over the matchy matchy and ready to try some older solid pieces! I am also over the footboard. It’s hard to make the bed and gets in the way. I have an antique cedar chest that was my great grandfather’s that I’ve wanted to put at the foot of our bed for so long!
Anyways, onto the Fall decor…
I love styling this shelf. It is a handmade (by my dad) cube shelf similar to the IKEA Expedit but obviously more solid and well made. The pumpkins, chalkboard and navy blue truck are all from Target Dollar Spot. The jack o’ lantern pumpkin is a ceramic (any one else’s mom went to ceramics in the 80s?). I plan to put a battery operated light in it. The pumpkins are on a stack of Revolutionary War books that I found at the library used book store. There is also a Clans and Tartans book I found at the antique shop.
The printer drawer is my love. It holds special meaning to me. Since I am a writer, printing is a form of writing and sharing with people. Also, Jamie Fraser in Outlander became a printer and so did his adopted son, Fergus. The printer blocks are antiques that I was lucky enough to find at someone’s booth who had antiques at a craft fair this summer.
I made the wooly ball garland from wool balls that I found at Michael’s and used bakery’s twine I found at the Dollar Tree! The burlap wreath I made and was actually super easy. I have a post about that here. The ‘H’ I bought at Michael’s and spray painted it a rubbed bronze color.
I’d love to get a longer and deeper shelf or even a barn beam as a shelf/mantle. But until then, this is what I have to work with.
So on the top we have a woodpecker toy thing- my granddad had it, gave it to me when my grandmother passed and he was cleaning out his stuff. I have books and old Bibles as a way to elevate and create dimension and height. The houses are from Target. They better come out with more this year because I love them and want to get more. I could also check thrift stores for little houses that I could spray paint, as well. The candle sticks are Baldwin and heavy. We received them as a wedding gift. I love the candle tapers because they are on a timer and just create such nice ambiance along with the dew/fairy lights. The picture in the middle is of my Great Granddad on his tractor. The two pennants in the back I recently found that are from Jamestown and Williamsburg. I thought they were fitting as I love those two places. The garland is from Target Dollar Spot this year.
For my hutch, I have a garland that if memory serves me correctly, I got at Michael’s. In the basin are huge pinecones my mom brought back from North Carolina this year. If you do this make sure to bake them to get the critters out! I love it! I feel like I have a piece of NC in my home! The leaves, I believe I got them at the dollar store a year ago.
I recently found this bookend at an antique warehouse. It’s the Colonial Williamsburg emblem/symbol. I had to have it! It’s actually from the late 1970s. I needed a book end for our Golden books, so this worked out well!
I just wanted to add an update on our gallery wall. See the original post here.
I found the scale for a great deal and the awesome chalkboard while shopping with my mom! I was so excited to get it up on the gallery wall! There is nothing like writing on a real slate chalkboard!
So there you have it! I hope you got some great ideas for your decorating!
