Knee high by the Fourth of July
Well it’s July and we are knee deep into gardening season. Our garden is growing by leaps and bounds and I swear I can see it grow. Each day, it’s as if each plant grew a foot. We now have a sunflower stalk with two beautiful flower heads, tons of red yarrow, fox glove, hollyhock, beautiful red coneflower, 4 o’clocks, asters and obedient plants. The Cherokee Trail of Tears Heirloom black beans are growing straight up the new tuteurs. I am incredibly thankful that I asked my husband to construct them. They were very much needed. The bush green beans, Roma tomatoes and pumpkin vine is exploding. Last evening, I decided to cut back the runners because I don’t want it to take over the tomato and pepper patch. I don’t know what I was thinking. What I think I thought was, this seed isn’t going to germinate. Well it did! We could very well have tons of Jack ‘O Lanterns.
Last month, we added white pea gravel and let me tell you- it reminds me of the beach! I also added some solar lights and it looks magical at night. I have started to think about what has worked for us and what I do and don’t want to plant next year. I decided to plant kale and carrots for the Fall. I ordered them from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company. Their seed packets are gorgeous and they are inexpensive.
I do intend on adding a privacy fence/screen with diamond lattice in the corners to just make it more of a ‘room’. I would also love to add a white pickett fence and an arbor. Nope scratch that. Since starting this post, I have since added a grape vine to my property. We will be creating a vineyard in the back of our property come the Fall. We will add the raspberry and black raspberry bushes back there as well. The fencing might have to wait until next year.
Our latest adventure: we added quail to our ‘suburban homestead’. More on that in a future post.
