It’s hard to believe we are in the home stretch for the 2018-2019 school year. Have you started thinking about plans for the summer (other than family vacations)? Do you have a summer bucket list? Check out my checklist for the end of the school year: 10 things to do in May and my summer bucket list!
For awhile now, I had wanted to get a membership to some nearby attraction that I could take the boys to during the weekends, summer, etc when my husband was working or that we could do as a family. We even went one day right before a snowstorm to get our energy out before we had to stay indoors for a day or so. I thought of the zoo but our local zoo only has North American animals. The local flower gardens would get old for us after awhile and I’m sure girls appreciate that more than boys.
I took them to a Harvest Days event at a local historical village and we enjoyed it. It reminded me of a smaller scale Williamsburg. I had looked into getting a membership there but it was $75 for a family. While that’s not too crazy, I wasn’t sure if we would get our money’s worth. A friend of mine posted on Facebook that she was looking for someone to go in on a buy one get one for $35 for the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation family membership! This included the local historical village, the Pennsylvania State Museum and Curiosity Connection. There were many others listed on the History Trail that sounded interesting or were local. $35 for all that? What a deal! Please note, this deal has ended. It was only available at the end of the year.
Since then, we have been to the State Museum of PA, PA Lumber Museum and one day before we got a snow storm back in January and I was down to one kid, we went and walked around in the Landis Valley Museum historical village to get out for some fresh air!
I love history and want to get my boys into it as well. I thought this would be a great way to do so. Plus, they are learning all the while. Also, it is nice if we just need to get out of the house, get some fresh air or walk around somewhere neat and interesting for free
I recommend getting a membership like this or to your local zoo, play gym, anywhere you can take your family many times and save money doing so. I am thinking about the future with summer coming. This way we always have an option that is paid for.
Here are several options:
- local zoo or aquarium– a lot of these memberships have reciprocal deals where you can get into other zoos for free or discounted. This is great when you are visiting family and friends or on vacation in another state.
- play gymnasiums
- bowling
- historical sites/museums
- children’s gardens
- science museums
- amusement park– look for discount deals at grocery stores and other participating partners.
- trampoline park
Hopefully that gives you ideas/options of what kind of membership to get for your family that will save you a lot of stress in the summertime.
Do you have a membership already? For where? I’d love some more ideas! Leave me a comment below!
