Taming the Deep Freezer

We bought our freezer about 3 years ago. I know it has been at least that long because I remember having it before we had my son because I was thinking we could use it if I ever ended up pumping and storing breastmilk. And as the years went on I learned how to fill it up for not only our family needs but for efficency of using the electricity to run it. Over that time the food began getting jumbled, bread and other delicate food crushed and it was just a disorganized mess no matter how I tried to keep it in order. I remembered watching a youtube video by organizinging guru Alejandra Costello in which she used ‘milk’ crates. I will link the video below. So I sought out to acquire crates to use in our freezer. Our church was getting rid of some so I took 2 and brought them home to start my quest to a newly organized freezer. I apologize in advance for the lighting in our basement where the freezer is located isn’t very ideal for photo taking but you get the idea.

Before:

and after….

For the bottom crate I decided to put all venison meat to distinguish between our different types of meat. In that crate I grouped the ground, loin and such like with like.

I stacked the second crate on top of the bottom one and put our tilipia, chicken, spiral ham, ground turkey, etc. As for the shelves that go across the top I just organized them well and grouped like items together.

Hope this helps you get an idea how to better organize your freezer instead of the unorganized pit that they tend to become as you add more and more food items. This helps you not forget what you bought. To take things one step further I started a list that I printed off similar to this Freezer printable, but you can just search on Pinterest for one that would work for you. I just do a freezer inventory and write down items that I have stored and when I use the item up I put a check so I know that I need to replenish that item. Some items like frozen corn, peas, bread, shredded cheese, etc, I try to keep a back up of so I don’t run out as quickly on those staples. Also, once a season, I try, try to do a freezer clean out so I don’t go nuts if things start to get disorganized or jumbled. That way food stays in rotation and gets eaten and not freezer burn or wasted.

So there you have it, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! Hope this finds you warm and healthy! Have a great day!

Plum Paper Planner review

Hey there! I’m so glad you stopped by my blog!

I’m a wife to a realtor and a momma to 2 energetic boys, living in a bi-level home (some people call it a split level) and fixing it up to suit us. I love a good DIY and being creative. I am passionate about history and  visiting historical places like it’s my job- particularly Colonial time period. I love finding antiques/vintage and rustic items to add to my home decor, vacationing in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and fantasizing about trips to Scotland. Read more

On this blog I share a lot of those things and more, so comment, share, subscribe and come along for the ride!
